General instructions for Corneal topography

Quick and non-invasive test that creates a detailed 3D map of the eye's transparent surface (cornea).

  • Definition: A quick and non-invasive test that creates a detailed three-dimensional map of the clear surface of the eye (cornea).
  • Fasting: No fasting necessary. You can eat your usual food and drink water or liquids normally before coming to your appointment.
  • Medication: You should maintain and take your usual medication at the appropriate times. As always, any adjustment in your treatments or doubts about using your daily eye drops should be discussed beforehand with your doctor.
  • Clothing and Accessories: We recommend wearing the clothes you feel most comfortable in. There is absolutely no restriction on metals, jewelry, piercings, or watches for this exam.
  • Specific Requirements: The most important and strict requirement is that, if you use contact lenses (lentillas), you must stop using them before the test, as they temporarily deform the cornea and would alter the result. Generally, you are required to stop using soft contact lenses 3 to 7 days before, and rigid or semi-rigid ones 2 to 4 weeks before, but it is essential to follow the exact guidelines provided by your ophthalmologist or medical center.
  • Expected discomfort or pain from the test: It is a completely safe, quick procedure and causes absolutely no pain. The equipment will not touch your eye at any time. The only small discomfort will be the effort of keeping your eyes wide open without blinking for a few seconds while staring at a spot of light within the machine, which might dazzle you slightly temporarily.
