General instructions for CT thorax (with and without contrast)
X-ray test (CT or scanner) to obtain detailed images of the lungs and thorax.
- Fasting: Without contrast, no fasting is required. With contrast, fast from solid food for 4-6 hours. You may drink water up to 2 hours before.
- Medication: Continue your usual medication. If you take metformin for diabetes, ask whether you should stop it temporarily if contrast is used.
- Clothing and Accessories: Wear comfortable clothing. Remove necklaces, chains, piercings and garments with metal on the upper body (buttons, zips, underwired bras).
- Specific Requirements: Tell the staff if you have asthma, kidney problems or allergies to iodinated contrast media. You will need to hold your breath for a few seconds during the test. You must tell the staff if you are pregnant.
- Discomfort or pain after the test: A quick and painless procedure. If contrast is used, it is common to feel a passing warmth and a metallic taste in the mouth.
