General instructions for Head CT scan (with and without contrast)

X-ray test (CT or scanner) to obtain detailed images of the brain and skull bones.

  • Fasting: Without contrast doesn't require fasting. With contrast, fast from solids for 4 to 6 hours. Drinking water is allowed up to 2 hours before.
  • Medication: Maintain your usual medication. If you take metformin for diabetes, consult if you should stop it if contrast is used.
  • Clothing and Accessories: Wear comfortable clothes. Strict metal restriction on head and neck (earrings, necklaces, piercings, glasses, hearing aids, hairpins, and dentures).
  • Specific Requirements: Inform if you have asthma, kidney problems, or iodine allergies. It is crucial to keep your head completely still. Informing if you are pregnant is mandatory.
  • Expected discomfort or pain from the test: Very quick and painless procedure. If intravenous contrast is used, it is normal to feel temporary heat in the body and a metallic taste in the mouth.
