General instructions for CT abdomen and pelvis (with and without contrast)

X-ray test (CT or scanner) to obtain detailed images of the abdominal and pelvic organs.

  • Fasting: If it's without contrast, fasting is usually not required. With contrast, fast from solids for 4-6 hours prior. Drinking water is allowed up to 2 hours before.
  • Medication: Maintain your usual medication. If you take metformin for diabetes, consult if you should stop it on the day of the contrast.
  • Clothing and Accessories: Wear comfortable clothes. Remove jewelry, watches, piercings, belts, or garments with metal (including bra underwires).
  • Specific Requirements: Notify if you have kidney problems, asthma, or allergies (iodine/contrast). Sometimes you must drink an oral contrast 1-2 hours before. Informing if you are pregnant is mandatory.
  • Expected discomfort or pain from the test: The test is painless. If intravenous contrast is used, it is normal to feel a sudden heat in the body, a metallic taste, or the urge to urinate, which disappear quickly.
