General instructions for Coronary CT scan (heart computed tomography)

It is a fast imaging test that uses X-rays and intravenous contrast to obtain detailed 3D images of the heart and its blood vessels.

  • Fasting: Fasting from solid food for 4 to 6 hours beforehand is usually requested. You may drink water to stay hydrated. As with the stress test, it is very important to avoid caffeine, tea, energy drinks, chocolate, or stimulant medications for 12 hours prior, as the test's success depends on your heart beating at a relaxed pace.
  • Medication: Continue your usual treatment. In some cases, the doctor will prescribe a specific medication (a beta-blocker) to be taken a few hours before to ensure a slow heart rate during the scan. If you take metformin, consult your specialist, as it is sometimes suspended after contrast administration.
  • Clothing and Accessories: Wear comfortable clothes. You will be asked to remove any metal objects from the chest area (underwire bras, necklaces, piercings, zippers), as they interfere with the scan images.
  • Specific Requirements: Notify the staff before the test if you have a history of asthma, kidney problems, or if you've ever had an allergic reaction to iodine contrast. After the test, you can go home without a companion and resume normal life, drinking plenty of water to help flush out the contrast.

  • Mandatory requirement: If there is any possibility of being pregnant, it is strictly mandatory to report it before the test.*
