General instructions for Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR)

It is an advanced imaging test that does not use radiation (X-rays), but a powerful magnet and radio waves to create very detailed moving images of the structure and function of your heart.

  • Fasting: Generally, fasting for 4 to 6 hours before the test is requested, especially if intravenous contrast (gadolinium) will be used or if you will receive sedation for claustrophobia.
  • Medication: You can take your usual medication with a sip of water.
  • Clothing and Accessories: This is the most critical part of preparation. The equipment is a giant magnet, so entering with any metal objects is strictly prohibited. You must remove jewelry, watches, piercings, hearing aids, hairpins, coins, and credit cards. We recommend wearing clothes without metal zippers or buttons, and women should avoid underwire bras. A gown will be provided at the center.
  • Specific Requirements: It is vital to inform the doctor or technician before the appointment if you have a pacemaker, defibrillator, cochlear implant, aneurysm clips, metal prostheses, or metal fragments/shrapnel in your body. Also, if you suffer from severe claustrophobia, discuss it with your doctor beforehand to consider a mild relaxant (in which case you must be accompanied).

  • Mandatory requirement: If there is any possibility of being pregnant, it is strictly mandatory to report it before the test.*
