General instructions for IUD insertion (intrauterine device)

Insertion of a small T-shaped contraceptive device inside the uterus.

  • Fasting: No fasting required. Having a light meal is recommended to avoid dizziness.
  • Medication: Maintain your usual medication. Taking a painkiller (ibuprofen) 30-60 minutes beforehand is usually advised (consult your doctor).
  • Clothing and Accessories: Comfortable two-piece clothing.
  • Specific Requirements: It is essential to rule out the possibility of pregnancy before insertion; inform your doctor if there is any chance you might be pregnant. Many specialists prefer insertion during the final days of menstruation (cervix is more open). Bringing a companion is not mandatory but may be recommended in case of dizziness.
  • Expected discomfort or pain from the test: Intense and brief prick or cramp during insertion. Afterward, it is normal to experience mild cramps, occasional dizziness, and light vaginal bleeding for the following days or weeks.
