General instructions for Holter monitor (24-hour electrocardiogram)

It is a non-invasive test in which a small portable device connected to your chest via cables is placed on you, in order to record the electrical activity of your heart during your usual daily routine.

  • Fasting: No fasting is necessary. You can (and should) eat and drink normally before and during the test.
  • Medication: Continue taking your medication as usual unless explicitly instructed otherwise by your cardiologist.
  • Clothing and Accessories: Please wear comfortable two-piece clothing (pants/skirt and a shirt). A loose shirt that buttons up the front is preferable, as it facilitates placing the cables and helps conceal the device. Avoid necklaces that might rub against the chest cables.
  • Specific Requirements: You should shower before your appointment; once the device is on, you cannot bathe or get your chest wet for the 24 to 48 hours of the study. Also, do not apply creams, lotions, or oils to the chest area to ensure the adhesive electrodes don't come loose. You'll be asked to keep a brief "diary" noting any symptoms (like palpitations or dizziness) and the time they occurred.
