General instructions for Cardiac electrophysiology study (EPS)
Invasive test to evaluate the electrical activity of the heart and diagnose or treat arrhythmias.
- Fasting: Absolute fasting from solid food and liquids for 6 to 8 hours before the procedure is required. Only a minimal sip of water is allowed if strictly necessary to take authorized medication.
- Medication: If you take anticoagulants (such as acenocoumarol/sintrom, warfarin, rivaroxaban, apixaban, dabigatran, heparin, etc.) or antiplatelets (such as aspirin, clopidogrel, ticagrelor, prasugrel, etc.), they usually require suspension before the test (except for ASA 100 mg, which is usually maintained). However, it is ESSENTIAL that you follow the exact instructions given by your doctor. Review the consultation report in which the test was requested to confirm the specific guidelines for your case. It may also be necessary to stop antiarrhythmic drugs.
- Clothing and Accessories: Wear loose and comfortable clothes. Remove any metal objects (jewelry, watches, piercings), removable dentures, hearing aids, or glasses.
- Specific Requirements: It is mandatory to be accompanied, as you will receive sedation and will not be able to drive. Shaving the groin area, and sometimes the neck or arm, is generally necessary. Bring any previous reports.
- Expected discomfort or pain from the test: You will feel a slight prick or sting with the local anesthesia. During the study, it is normal to feel palpitations or a rapid heartbeat. After the test, a small bruise or slight discomfort in the puncture area is common.
- Mandatory requirement: If there is any possibility of being pregnant, it is strictly mandatory to report it before the test.*
