General instructions for Spirometry

Fast and painless test that measures how much air you can inhale and exhale from the lungs.

  • Fasting: Does not require strict fastinging. It is recommended to avoid heavy meals for two hours prior.
  • Medication: If you use inhalers, they may need to be temporarily stopped (between 6 and 24 hours before). Any medication adjustment should be discussed beforehand with your doctor.
  • Clothing and Accessories: Use loose, comfortable clothing. Avoid garments that tighten the chest, abdomen, or neck (to allow maximum chest expansion during the test). If you use dentures, it is usually recommended to keep them in.
  • Specific Requirements: Do not smoke or vape for at least 4 to 6 hours before. Avoid intense physical exercise 30-60 minutes prior. Do not consume alcohol on the day of the appointment.
  • Expected discomfort or pain from the test: The test is painless, but it is normal to experience coughing, a slight passing dizziness, a feeling of shortness of breath, or mild fatigue immediately after exertion.
