General instructions for Electromyogram (EMG)

Test that evaluates the health of the muscles and the nerves that control them using small electrical stimuli.

  • Definition: A test that evaluates the health of the muscles and the nerves that control them using small electrical stimuli.
  • Fasting: No fasting necessary. You can eat your usual food and drink water or liquids completely normally before coming to the appointment.
  • Medication: You should continue taking your usual medication. However, it is absolutely essential that you inform if you take anticoagulants (blood-thinning medications) or if you are prescribed drugs for neuromuscular diseases, remembering that any adjustment or suspension must always be discussed beforehand with your doctor.
  • Clothing and Accessories: We recommend wearing very comfortable and loose clothing that allows the area to be examined (such as arms, legs, or neck) to be easily exposed. Avoid wearing jewelry, bracelets, rings, or watches on the limbs to be evaluated, as they could interfere with the study.
  • Specific Requirements: The most important requirement is to arrive with the skin of the area to be examined freshly washed and completely dry. It is strictly forbidden to apply moisturizing creams, lotions, oils, sunscreens, or ointments on the day of the test, as these products prevent the electrodes from working correctly. Additionally, it is mandatory to inform the specialist if you are a carrier of a pacemaker or a defibrillator.
  • Expected discomfort or pain from the test: This test can be somewhat uncomfortable or generate mild pain, but it is completely tolerable. It is divided into two parts: in the first (nerve conduction), you will feel small cramps or quick electrical touches on the skin, similar to static electricity. In the second part, the doctor will insert an extremely fine needle into the muscle, which feels like a small prick followed by a slight pressure or a muscle spasm. It is completely normal for the evaluated muscles to feel a bit sore or sensitive for one or two days, like having muscle aches from exercise.
