General instructions for Electrocardiogram (ECG, EKG)

Quick and painless test that records the heart's electrical activity using small patches placed on the skin.

  • Definition: A quick and painless test that records the electrical activity of the heart using small patches placed on the skin.
  • Fasting: No fasting necessary. You can eat your usual food and drink plain water or liquids completely normally before coming for the test.
  • Medication: You should maintain and take your usual medication at the times that correspond to you. As always, if you have any specific doubt about your treatments, this should be consulted with your doctor.
  • Clothing and Accessories: We recommend using comfortable and easy-to-remove clothing. Ideally, wear a shirt buttoned in the front or loose items, as the medical staff will need to access your chest, wrists, and ankles. It is not necessary to remove necklaces or earrings, but you might be asked to remove bracelets or watches to place the sensors correctly.
  • Specific Requirements: On the day of the test, it is very important that your skin is clean and dry. Do not apply moisturizing creams, lotions, oils, or talcum powder to the chest, arms, or legs, as they can prevent the adhesive patches (electrodes) from sticking correctly. Additionally, if you have a lot of chest hair, nursing staff might need to shave small areas to ensure good electrode contact.
  • Expected discomfort or pain from the test: It is a completely harmless procedure and causes no pain. You will not feel electric current of any kind. The only discomfort could be a slight cold sensation when placing the patches or a small pull on the skin, similar to removing a band-aid, when they are removed at the end.
