General instructions for Transthoracic echocardiogram

Basically, it is an ultrasound performed from the outside of the chest to see in real-time the size of your heart, its valves, and how it pumps blood. It is a completely painless and fast procedure.

  • Fasting: No fasting is necessary. You can eat and drink normally before your appointment.
  • Medication: You should maintain your usual medication. It's not necessary to stop or adjust any drugs for this test, though as always, any changes to your treatment should be consulted with your doctor beforehand.
  • Clothing and Accessories: I recommend wearing comfortable, two-piece clothing (for example, pants or a skirt with a blouse or shirt). To perform the ultrasound, the specialist will ask you to undress from the waist up (usually a gown or partial covering will be provided). Avoid wearing long necklaces that might lie over the chest, although rings, bracelets, or watches are fine.
  • Specific Requirements: Preparation is simple, and a companion is not required, as no sedation is used, and you can go home and resume normal life immediately. The only practical tip is to avoid applying body creams, oils, or lotions to the chest area on the day of the test; the doctor will use a water-based gel on your skin to glide the ultrasound probe, and prior creams can make it harder to get a clear image or place electrodes if they monitor your heart rate simultaneously.
