General instructions for Transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE)
This is an ultrasound of the heart in which a small probe is inserted through the mouth and esophagus to obtain much clearer images of the cardiac structures.
- Fasting: Strict fasting is required. Do not consume any solid food or liquids (including water) for 8 hours before the test.
- Medication: You can take your usual medication with a tiny sip of water, but it is crucial to consult your doctor first, especially if you take anticoagulants, antiplatelets, or insulin/diabetes medication.
- Clothing and Accessories: Wear loose-fitting clothes that are easy to remove from the upper body. You must remove glasses and jewelry from the neck, ears, or mouth piercings. If you use removable dentures, you will be asked to remove them just before the procedure begins.
- Specific Requirements: Since mild sedation or a local anesthetic for the throat is usually administered for your comfort, you must be accompanied by an adult. You will not be able to drive, operate machinery, or make important legal decisions for the rest of the day.
