General instructions for Stress echocardiogram

This test combines an ultrasound of the heart with a stress situation. The stress can be performed by pedaling on a special bicycle or, if you cannot exercise, by administering a medication intravenously that simulates the effect of stress on the heart.

  • Fasting: Fasting for 3 to 4 hours before the test is recommended. It is essential to strictly avoid coffee, tea, caffeinated drinks, chocolate, and alcohol for 12 to 24 hours prior.
  • Medication: Your doctor will likely ask you to stop certain medications that slow down the heart rate (such as beta-blockers) 24 to 48 hours beforehand. However, this must only be directed and scheduled by your cardiologist.
  • Clothing and Accessories: If the test involves physical exercise, wear comfortable clothes (sportswear or two-piece outfits) and appropriate shoes for pedaling. Avoid wearing long necklaces.
  • Specific Requirements: Do not apply moisturizing creams to the chest on the day of the test, as they make it difficult to place the electrodes. If the stress is induced with medication, it is normal to feel palpitations, heat, or flushing during the test; staff will be by your side monitoring you at all times.
