General instructions for Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)
Test that combines bronchoscopy and ultrasound to examine and take samples from the lungs.
- Fasting: Strict fasting from solid foods and liquids for 6 to 8 hours. Drinking water is not allowed.
- Medication: Maintain your usual medication. If you take anticoagulants (such as acenocoumarol/sintrom, warfarin, rivaroxaban, apixaban, dabigatran, heparin, etc.) or antiplatelets (such as aspirin, clopidogrel, ticagrelor, prasugrel, etc.), they usually require suspension before the test (except for ASA 100 mg, which is usually maintained). However, it is ESSENTIAL that you follow the exact instructions given by your doctor. Review the consultation report in which the test was requested to confirm the specific guidelines for your case. It is essential to inform if you are allergic to local anesthetics (such as lidocaine).
- Clothing and Accessories: Wear loose clothes. Remove glasses, contact lenses, dentures, hearing aids, jewelry, and piercings (neck/face).
- Specific Requirements: You will receive deep sedation or general anesthesia and will not be able to drive or operate machinery for the rest of the day. After the test, do not eat or drink for at least 2 hours or until you fully recover sensation in your throat, to avoid choking. It is essential to be accompanied by an adult.
- Expected discomfort or pain from the test: Mild throat pain or stinging, hoarseness, dry cough, or coughing up a bit of blood in the sputum (24-48h).
