General instructions for MR cholangiopancreatography (MRCP)
Magnetic resonance test to visualize in detail the bile ducts, gallbladder, and pancreas.
Fasting: Strict fasting for 6 to 8 hours (allows the gallbladder to fill and not contract).
Medication: Maintain your usual medication with a minimal sip of water.
Clothing and Accessories: Wear comfortable clothes. Absolute metal restriction (jewelry, hearing aids, cards, underwire bras).
Specific Requirements: Vital to inform if you have metal implants (pacemakers, clips, etc.). If you have claustrophobia, notify beforehand. In some centers, you will be given pineapple juice before the test. You must hold your breath for 10-15 seconds.
Expected discomfort or pain from the test: Painless and without radiation. You will be in a narrow tube for 15-30 minutes with loud noises (you will be given earplugs).
Mandatory requirement: If there is any possibility of being pregnant, it is strictly mandatory to report it before the test.*
