General instructions for Cervical/vaginal cytology (Pap smear)

Test to detect abnormal cells in the cervix and prevent cervical cancer.

  • Fasting: No fasting required.
  • Medication: Maintain your oral medication. Stop vaginal creams or suppositories (consult your doctor).
  • Clothing and Accessories: Comfortable two-piece clothing (only undress from the waist down).
  • Specific Requirements: Do not schedule during your menstrual period (wait 5 days after bleeding ends). Abstain from intercourse involving penetration for 48h prior. No internal vaginal douches, tampons, gels, lubricants, or intimate deodorants for 48-72h prior. Avoid immersion baths (bathtub, swimming pool, jacuzzi) for 48 hours beforehand.
  • Expected discomfort or pain from the test: Mild pressure when the speculum is inserted and a quick brushing when the sample is taken. Mild spotting for 1-2 days afterward is normal.
