General instructions for Visual field test (perimetry)

Painless visual test that measures the width of your peripheral and central vision by detecting small light flashes.

  • Definition: A painless visual test that measures the extent of your peripheral and central vision by detecting small light flashes.
  • Fasting: No fasting necessary. You can eat your usual food and drink water or liquids normally before coming to your appointment.
  • Medication: You should maintain and take your usual medication at the appropriate times, including the use of your daily eye drops or artificial tears. As always, any doubt or adjustment about your treatments should be discussed beforehand with your doctor.
  • Clothing and Accessories: We recommend wearing the clothes you feel most comfortable in. There is absolutely no restriction on metals, jewelry, piercings, or watches for this exam.
  • Specific Requirements: The essential requirement is that you take your current glasses or contact lenses with you, especially those you use for reading or near vision. Additionally, we suggest coming well-rested, as the test requires you to maintain concentration. During the exam, you must rest your forehead and chin on the machine, stare at a central point without moving your eyes, and press a button every time you perceive a flashing light around you.
  • Expected discomfort or pain from the test: It is a completely harmless procedure, in which the equipment will not touch your eye at any time, so it is totally painless. The only discomfort you might experience is a slight eye tiredness or mental fatigue from the effort of maintaining attention and a fixed gaze during the 5 to 10 minutes that the test usually lasts for each eye.
