General instructions for Bronchoscopy

  • Fasting: Strict fasting from solid food and liquids for 6 to 8 hours. Drinking water is not allowed.
  • Medication: Maintain your usual medication (with a minimal sip if vital). Consult about stopping anticoagulants or antiplatelets. It is essential to inform if you are allergic to local anesthetics (such as lidocaine).
  • Clothing and Accessories: Use comfortable clothes. Remove dentures, glasses, hearing aids, jewelry, and piercings (especially in face and neck).
  • Specific Requirements: You will receive sedation and will not be able to drive or operate machinery for the rest of the day. After the test, do not eat or drink for at least 2 hours or until you fully recover sensation in your throat, to avoid choking. It is mandatory to be accompanied by an adult.
  • Expected discomfort or pain from the test: It is normal to feel throat pain or irritation, hoarseness, dry cough, or to cough up a little bit of blood in the sputum for the first 24 hours.
